Mr. & Mrs. Mahi Movie Review: Star Performance

Rajkummar Rao shines with the depth and intensity he brings to the character of Mahendra, who faces relentless criticism from his father. His expressions and dialogue delivery convincingly convey Mahendra’s pain. In lighter moments, such as when he records silly videos while coaching his wife Mahima, Rajkummar effortlessly transitions from seriousness to humor, leaving the audience in splits.

Janhvi Kapoor, on the other hand, delivers a decent performance but feels underutilized as Mahima. Her character often resorts to crying and speaking softly, lacking the assertiveness one might expect from someone pursuing a dream. Her role feels like an extension of her character in “Bawaal,” and despite the story’s setting in Jaipur, one wishes for more development in her character’s arc.

Mr. & Mrs. Mahi Movie Review: Direction and Music

Sharan Sharma’s direction clearly aims to tell a love story centered on a shared passion for cricket. His intention to inspire through a tale of mutual support and self-discovery is evident. However, the narrative sometimes loses focus amidst the jealousy drama and Mahendra’s internal conflicts. The cricket scenes, especially in the second half, could have been more prominent to better highlight Mahima’s talent.

The music in “Mr & Mrs Mahi” is a strong point, with Vishal Mishra’s “Roya Jab Tu” standing out as a favorite.

Mr. & Mrs. Mahi Movie Review: Script Analysis

The story, co-written by Sharan Sharma and Nikhil Mehrotra, explores a couple in an arranged marriage finding a common interest and striving towards it. The first hour delves into Mahendra’s personal struggles and his strained relationship with his father. Even after Mahima enters the narrative, the plot takes its time to reveal her cricketing skills, focusing more on building their love story amidst various problems.

In the second half, the film juggles between cricket and jealousy. The sequences where Mahendra trains Mahima are engaging, but such thrilling moments are sparse until the climax. The latter part of the film leans heavily on the husband-wife dispute, again emphasizing Mahendra’s internal struggles over the cricket element.

Mr. & Mrs. Mahi Movie Review: The Last Word

Overall, “Mr & Mrs Mahi” seeks to inspire with its story of a couple supporting each other in achieving their dreams. The narrative is rich with hurdles, reflecting the real challenges in their journey. Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor’s on-screen chemistry brings warmth, and there are moments where their love story feels genuinely heartwarming. However, the film’s potential is somewhat diminished by its sidelining of the cricket theme in favor of personal drama.
